There is no compelling reason why Pistorius news is newsworthy.

It took a huge firestorm in social media (Twitter and Facebook) to bring the story of Ferguson in our national media. Today, the U.S. media brought the story of Pistorius to us, although no one seemed to demand the story.

It is not unusual for U.S. media to feature stories that seem to not warrant national attention (unless you are looking purely from an Entertainment angle), but Pistorius story is puzzling.

As of this writing, we have real national news in regards to the September 11th anniversary, NFL scandal, and the U.S. job situation. In international news, we have serious developments after President Obama's speech on ISIS yesterday and the E.U.'s sanctions on Russia.

What is it about Pistorius that is so newsworthy in the U.S.?

Both Pistorius and his girlfriend are not Americans, and the trial is held in South Africa, which has a different judicial system than the U.S. A gun was involved in the Pistorius incident, but everything is developing in South Africa and not in the U.S. It is highly doubtful that a meaningful "conversation" can be even entertained regarding gun rights in the U.S. just from the Pistorius trial.

There is nothing newsworthy about Pistorius for the U.S. audience.

Perhaps there is an entertainment angle in the story. Pistorius is a celebrated athlete and an inspiration to many. But if that is true, then it does not explain why most of mainstream media in the U.S. is obsessed with this story.

Is this another evidence of the growing infiltration of entertainment media in our "respectable" news organization?
